CHAPTER SIXTEEN

DESSIE

Dessie cursed as she limped toward the office to answer the phone. Her foot was much better, but she wasn’t as quick as she would have liked. The door was ajar, and she heard Grayson’s voice. “Dessie’s B&B.”

Relieved that Grayson was there to pick up the slack, she took a moment to catch her breath and smooth her hair before entering.

Dessie felt guilty that Grayson was sitting in her office waiting for new guests. This was his summer vacation, and he probably found the tasks pretty dull. Giving him the password to her computer had been the least thing she could do for him. At least this way he could access the internet, get some of his own work done, maybe.

But a glimpse of the screen revealed playing cards. Oh god, she thought, Grayson had to be bored out of his skull if he had resorted to playing solitaire.

Grayson smiled at her and handed her the phone. “Inspector Reid.”

Frowning, Dessie said, “Hello?”

“Mrs. McKendrick? Do you have time to come down to the station as soon as possible? And bring Nicole with you? I just spoke to her. She doesn’t have a car, and I could send someone to pick her up, but I thought you might be interested in what we have to tell her, too...and, well, can you come?” The inspector seemed nervous. So far, she had only ever experienced him calm and confident.

“What’s wrong?” she asked. “Did something happen?”

“I’d rather discuss that with you in person, Mrs. McKendrick.”

At that moment, Nicole knocked on the door to the office and stuck her head in.

Dessie nodded at her. She knew this had to be about Nate. They must have found something. Maybe his DNA on the spot she had marked on the map, the place where the ritual had taken place.

“Um...yes, of course I’ll come. The only thing is…” Dessie pushed a strand of hair behind her ear, looking questioningly in Grayson’s direction. “I don’t think I can drive yet, with my injured foot.” Grayson pointed at himself and gave her a thumbs-up.

Dessie smiled gratefully. “But there is someone who can drive us. I have to lock up the B&B, though. Since there’ll be no one here, I have to put a note on the door. Can you tell me approximately how long this will take so I know when we’ll be back?”

The inspector was silent for a moment. “I don’t think this will take long, Mrs. McKendrick. I’ll have one of my constables drive Nicole back if she...uh...if she’s going to be here longer.”

It sounded like she was correct in her assumption. This would be bad news for Nicole. Dessie tried not to let this realization show in her expression. “Okay,” was all she said. “We’ll be there soon, Inspector.”

After Dessie put a note on the door informing potential guests that they could not check in until after six p.m., Grayson drove Dessie, Nicole, and Sam to Helensburgh.

On their way into town, Dessie learned Val had moved on.
